Custom plantation shutters are only as good as the installation behind them. Gaps, uneven louvers, and frames that don't sit flush are installation problems, not product problems. Every Golden West wood, Polylux and poly shutter is installed by our own finish carpenters.
Our clients are mostly busy homeowners who want the job done right without a lot of back and forth. We keep the process simple: one in-home consultation and measurement, then usually a single installation day. If something comes up afterward, you call 949-951-0600 and reach the team that built it.
Why homeowners choose Golden West installation
Our own finish carpenters, never a subcontractor
Every install is done by Golden West finish carpenters, the same team that builds your shutters. No gig installers, no handoffs.
Installed as finish carpentry
Many shutters ship pre-assembled and go straight onto the wall. We treat every shutter as finish carpentry: each frame is fitted to your opening and every miter joint is touched up on site. Our installers have the same skills as a cabinetry installer, and each one is a licensed contractor and a Golden West employee. Installation is one of the six principles of a custom shutter.
Installation tied to our factory
Your shutters and their installation are one job under one written estimate, with no shipping or outside installer in between. Our Lake Forest factory is just off the 241 Toll Road, so any fix or adjustment, on install day or years later, comes straight from our own shop. If a window turns out to be out of alignment on install day, our installer can bring it back to the factory and we build the fix there.
Our plantation shutter installation process

Before install day
- Free in-home consultation. An owner, Dave or John, measures every opening, including arches, bays, and off-square openings, with panels up to 48 inches wide.
- Written estimate with every line itemized. No flat-rate averages.
- Your panels are milled and finished at our Lake Forest factory. Most projects are installed 3 to 5 weeks after you order.

Install day
- Our crew arrives on schedule with floor and wall protection in place.
- Each panel is hung to your measured opening. Our finish carpenters align every panel and louver, finish the mitered corners, touch up the finish, and adjust hinge tension on the spot.
- Most few-room projects wrap in 2 to 4 hours. Most installs finish in a single day; larger homes may take up to two.

Walkthrough & aftercare
- Full walkthrough with you before the crew leaves. Every panel opens, closes, and seats flush.
- Any minor touch-ups are completed on-site.
- If anything comes up later, you call us directly and reach the same team that built your shutters.

Golden West installation vs. typical shutter installation
Most shutter companies sell the product and hand installation to someone else. Here is where that shows.
Shutter installation for arched & specialty windows
Most shutter problems start with the opening, not the product. We mill to your window, not a catalog.

Arched & shaped tops
Eyebrow arches, sunburst tops, octagons, and angled openings. We mill to your specific radius and trim profile.
Shutter installation questions
Is installation included in the price of my shutters?
Yes. Installation by our own finish carpenters is part of every Golden West project, along with measurement, hardware, and the final walkthrough. Your written estimate itemizes every line, so there are no surprise install fees.
How much does plantation shutter installation cost?
Installation is part of every Golden West estimate, typically about 10% of the total installed price. The exact amount depends on the size and complexity of each window and how many windows you're doing, which is why we evaluate your home in person at the free consultation.
How long does plantation shutter installation take?
Most few-room projects take 2 to 4 hours. Most installs finish in a single day; larger homes may take up to two. Most orders are installed 3 to 5 weeks after you order.
Do you install wood plantation shutters?
Yes. We install wood, Polylux and poly plantation shutters, all built at our Lake Forest factory. Wood is our choice for living rooms and bedrooms, and its light weight keeps tall, wide panels hanging straight. For bathrooms and kitchens we recommend poly or Polylux. Every custom shutter is installed by our own finish carpenters. See our wood shutters.
Does a pre-assembled shutter frame make my window look smaller?
Often, yes. Pre-assembled shutters usually use an inside-mount frame, nailed inside the window jamb where the holes hide behind the panels. The frame sits inside the opening and shrinks it, so the louvers get shorter, you can lose one or two louvers, and the rails are fixed, sometimes up to 6 inches tall. Our showroom has the same window size mounted both ways so you can see the difference. Compare custom and made-to-measure shutters.
What if a window is out of alignment on install day?
Some problems, like a sloped sill or a window out of alignment, only show up on install day. A pre-assembled shutter can't be adjusted, so it goes in as built. Our finish carpenters adjust each frame on site, and when a window needs more, they bring it back to our Lake Forest factory and we build the fix there.
Can separated miter corners on a shutter frame be touched up?
Not on a pre-assembled shutter. Its frame is mitered and finished at the factory, so if a corner separates, the gap stays. Our finish carpenters touch up every miter on site with paint from our own spray booth, from the same paint lot as your shutters.
How do you protect my floors and walls during installation?
Our crew puts floor and wall protection in place before any work begins. Minor wall touch-ups around the frames are completed before we leave, so there is nothing left for you to fix.
Do you walk through the shutters with me before you leave?
Yes. Before the crew leaves, we walk every panel with you and confirm each one opens, closes, and seats flush. If anything needs adjusting, we adjust it on the spot.
Do you install shutters bought from another company?
Our crews install the shutters we build, which is how we back every job with a lifetime warranty. If you have shutters from another company that need adjusting or a part replaced, our Orange County shutter repair service can help.
